Weight loss through an injection?

A new development could make it easier for many overweight people to lose weight and thus protect them from diabetes. This is a simple injection that, in tests, caused patients to lose about 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in just four weeks.

The latest study by Imperial College London found that a special injection made obese people lose up to 4.5 kg in four weeks. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal "Diabetes Care".

Hormone cocktail to treat obesity?

The injection contains a hormone cocktail that burns fat effectively and with few side effects. The patients' blood sugar levels returned to almost normal levels within one month after the injection, the researchers report. The participants lost an average of 4.39 kilograms, almost twice as much as the people in the control group who received only saline.

Injection works much like a gastric band

An effective injection or slimming pill could be the big breakthrough in the fight against the obesity epidemic. Almost a third of the world's population is obese or overweight. According to the researchers, the new method mimics an adapted gastric band, but without the side effects that occur. With a gastric band, complications such as pain, chronic nausea and vomiting can occur after the operation. Earlier studies by the team suggested that gastric band surgery triggers a release of three specific hormones from the intestine at higher concentrations. This chemical combination, called GOP for short, reduces appetite, causes weight loss and improves the body's ability to use the sugar ingested from food.

The gastric band

A gastric band serves as a medical treatment method for pathological obesity, which cannot be treated by diets and conservative treatment measures. Along with other methods, the gastric band belongs to the spectrum of obesity surgery, the surgical therapy of pathological obesity.

Hormone cocktail was tested on 15 participants

Fifteen patients in a trial center at Hammersmith Hospital in London received GOP treatment for four weeks, during which the hormone cocktail was slowly injected under the skin for twelve hours. The participants were also informed by a nutritionist about healthy eating.

Treatment results are extremely promising

Obesity and type 2 diabetes can lead to very serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases such as cancer, strokes and heart diseases, the authors of the study explain. New drugs are urgently needed to improve and save the lives of many patients. Although it is only a small study, the combined hormone treatment is promising and has significantly improved patient health in just four weeks. In comparison to other methods, the treatment is non-invasive and lowers the blood sugar level to almost normal values, the researchers report. (as)
