At a recent meeting of the American Heart Association, researchers presented their latest study from March 2019. Their results make it clear that obese people have a lower tendency to clot when they consume olive oil once a week compared to people who consume olive oil much less frequently. The lower tendency to clot reduces the risk of blood clots and the blood can flow better through the vessels. The 63 participants were on average 32.2 years old and had an average BMI of over 44. From a BMI of 25, one speaks of overweight.

The researchers also presented their results in a press release. They make it clear that people who consume olive oil more than once a week have the best blood clotting levels. The good values ​​prevent deposits on the blood vessel walls, thus reducing the risk of stroke and heart attack.

"Obese people in particular are at increased risk of having a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular disease - even if they have no other risk factors, such as diabetes," said Dr. Sean P. Heffron, head of the current study and assistant professor at the NYU School of Medicine in New York. "Our study suggests that olive oil could reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack in overweight people," the expert continued.

Observational study did not check the amount consumed

However, only the frequency of olive oil consumption was checked in the study and not the quantity consumed in each case. Since it was a purely observational study, it cannot, of course, be proven that the consumption of olive oil alone could reduce blood clotting in obese people.

Further studies required

There are of course contrasting studies on these findings, but these have always been carried out with an excessive amount of fat, so the results can hardly be transferred to normal olive oil consumption in connection with a healthy balanced diet. (fm)
